Create Item IDs using a seed value
When auto assigning an ID number it can be useful to begin from a seed value. For example, starting at 10000 ensures a uniform width for the record ID since the number of characters will always remain the same.
Instructions
To get started, it's advisable to create a new column in your list or library. Since the "ID" column is a default for all lists and libraries, you'll need to name it something slightly different. The column should be set up as plain text.
Click the Ultimate Forms Design link in the menu bar to open the Ultimate Forms home.
Click the Item IDs link in the Business Logic to start working with the ID feature. When the window opens, Click the + Add new profile link to start a new schema.
In the Column field, click the drop-down and select the column where you want to add the ID value.
Select the On New check box to create an ID for all new records. Typically, you will deselect the Edit Item option - this would change ID numbers whenever you edited records, which would mess things up badly! Likewise, you typically want to select the Prevent Manual Editing option - you don't want to give people the ability to change ID numbers under normal circumstances.
Click into the Pattern area to open the Pattern builder. For this example, we'll assume that we have projects to track, so we'll start the pattern with "Proj." We'll then add the standard numerator function so that each new record is one more thant the last.
To use a seed value - that is, to start the numbering at a specific point - click into the numerator brackets after the number symbol and add a "pipe" character (|), then enter the starting point for your numbering. In this case, we'll start at 10000.
Save the pattern, then save the ID schema.
When you retunr to your list and start adding records, you'll see the pattern works as anticipated.
Summary
The Item ID settings allow for the creation of dynamic patterns which can allow for the creation of a variety of IDs. Our example allows us to start from a seed value.
